Flotation fill

A small sample of manure is combined with a salt flotation medium and examined under a microscope to determine the parasite burden of a given animal.

Here’s how:
Fill the measuring cup to 26ml (the black line) with flotation solution and add fecal matter until the mixture reaches the 30ml (the red line). This is the equivalent of weighing out 4 grams of feces.

Break up the manure in the bag to get the most representative sample. Using the tweezers, add bits until the solution reaches the black line. Mix thoroughly to distribute the eggs trapped in the manure. Eggs float so it is important to stir while sucking up the liquid for the most accurate count.
